Project Title: C Bay (Recording & Rehearsal Concert Hall)
Client: Concert Bay Ltd
Project Value: £14m
Hulley contact: Andy Bradley
Hulley & Kirkwood Ltd supplied the M&E design services for this £14million development in Cardiff on behalf of the BBC which is going to provide a ‘State of the Art’ Recording & Rehearsal Hall and Office Accommodation. The city has seen dramatic changes over the last 10 years and has had major investment to raise Cardiff’s profile.
The Client for this particular project is Concert Bay Ltd which is a subsidiary of Sir Robert McAlpine Enterprises Ltd who are co-funding the scheme. Hulley & Kirkwood are working closely with Capita Percy Thomas, the architects for this venture, to provide a technologically advanced M&E specification.
The double skinned ‘box within a box’ construction of this hall combined with the high specification acoustic design necessitates innovative M&E solutions to match.
One of the important criterions of the brief was to ensure the adaptability of space. To enable the presence of film crews to record live sessions, the interior design changes dynamically ensuring audio broadcasting quality second to none. This level of adaptability comes at a cost - adding 200Kw of heat, equivalent of 3300 domestic light bulbs, this must be removed. Thus, a bespoke, variable height integrated chilled acoustic elements and a ventilation system running at noise levels equivalent to a recording studio was devised.
In addition to the above, 3,600m² of Category A office space over 4 floors is to be provided.
