Sir Michael Sobell House

Hospice

Project Title: Sir Michael Sobell House

Project Value: £3.7m

Hulley contact: Stephen Harris

This project involved part-demolishing, extending and refurbishing to enhance the existing hospice to provide a more modern, practical facility while retaining a welcoming, homely and peaceful atmosphere for all who use the hospice.

The new build aspect of this scheme not only encompassed an unusual 90° curved purpose built hospice but also a newly constructed Chapel to provide support for residents, staff, families and visitors.

One of the fundamental principles within the design was to maximise as much natural light as possible and to give a ‘natural peaceful conservatory feel’ to the day/therapy rooms. This was achieved by arranging these areas around existing gardens and courtyards together with clever usage of windows and skylights to allow sunlight to flood in providing an internal environment which is bright, inviting and tranquil.

Another part of the design brief was to plan for the future use of the House by enabling an additional bedroom extension to be easily created without marring the integrity of the building.
