University of Edinburgh, MRI extension

Further & Higher Education

Project Title: University of Edinburgh, MRI extension

Project Value: £3.4m

Hulley contact: Simmy Telfer

The MRI extension is a four storey extension to the University of Edinburgh Chancellor Building. The extension was built specifically to house an animal MRI scanner for research purposes. Alongside the MRI Scanner Unit the remainder of the Extension contains animal holding facilities designed in compliance with Home Office approval.  Specialist rooms such as dark rooms, water maze rooms were provided as well as the MRI Scanner Department.  The design includes the usual electrical and mechanical packages for clean area laboratories, specialised rooms (as above), and secure rooms. Specialist lighting and security arrangements were also provided to certain areas due to the nature of the research being undertaken in the building. The lift installation was also tailored to suit the needs of the users as it was not installed solely for general personnel use.  As well as being accessible via the Chancellor Building, it is also linked to the Research Institute Facility via a link bridge.
