This new build library, combines the use of traditional ‘Book Based’ Learning with Electronic Based Learning. The overall Project cost was £4.5M to provide around 3,800m² of useable internal area comprising of 600m² IT based learning, 1,600m² book storage and Staff Accommodation and 1,600m² of traditional Study Accommodation. The Budget was recognised as ‘lean’ from the outset leading to a restricted slab to slab height with a reinforced concrete structure to support the weight of the book stacks. Particular issues related to the interconnection to existing building leading to a variation in floor to ceiling heights between floors and very restricted clear floor to ceiling heights on some floors. From the outset it was recognised that internal gains from computers, printers, lights and people, the occupation density and comfort requirements dictated a need for some form of cooling. The cooling is provided only for the intensive IT Learning Areas by two pipe fan coil units served by chilled water from a central chiller plant in an adjacent building. Extra chilled water capacity provided in mains pipework sizing to allow for the possible future expansion of IT based learning methods which would increase internal heat gains. This central plant was replaced and upgraded as part of the overall Project to reinforce chilled water supplies to other Key Areas of the Campus.
