University of Dundee - Biomedical Research Institute

Further & Higher Education

Project Title: University of Dundee - Biomedical Research Institute

Client: University of Dundee

Project Value: £12m

Hulley contact: Simmy Telfer

This Project was funded mainly by the Wellcome Trust and was to a large extent driven by the need for inherent flexibility of space use and servicing.

The Building is heavily serviced to provide the full range of Biological, Medical, Clinical and Pharmacological Support Functions.  Teaching Areas are provided on a modest scale with the bulk of the Accommodation devoted to ‘Soft’ Research (Desktop, Library and Computer based) and ‘Hard’ Research, (Microbiology, Bio-Chemistry and Pharmacological Laboratories).

A key restraint was that the new Building interconnected with the existing Buildings to maximise the effectiveness of both Buildings from a functional (space adjacency) and Engineering Services viewpoint.  There was also a major constraint on building height and a need to maximise the useable floor area within a constrained budget.

The resulting Building has a series of floors with differing floor to ceiling/ceiling void depths with varying intensity of service provision, responding the space planning to meet the various research accommodations needs.
