University of Abertay - Library and Learning Resource Centre

Further & Higher Education

Project Title: University of Abertay - Library and Learning Resource Centre

Client: University of Abertay

Project Value: £6m

Hulley contact: David Stewart

This £6m project provides a total of 4,300m² of accommodation comprising Atrium Entrance, IT Learning and Resources Study Areas, Book Stacks, Computer Teaching Laboratories and Staff Accommodation.  There is also a 24 hour ‘Hot Desk’ Study Area on the ground floor, which of course presents security and access difficulties.

From the outset, the aim was to provide a fully flexible IT based learning environment and although there are limited Book Stack Areas on each of the three Main Open Plan Study Areas, the expectation is that these will reduced over the next five years.  These areas were gradually populated by PC based Learning Areas which already existed in the major part of the building.

During the analysis stage of the project, when a full brief from the Client was obtained, requiring up to 1500 PC Study Positions and accommodation for Intensive Computer Based Classrooms, it became evident that this was equivalent to a modern telesales office environment.
