University of Leicester

Further & Higher Education

Project Title: University of Leicester

Client: University of Leicester

Project Value: £4.6m

Hulley contact: Andy Bradley

The refurbishment of the second phase of the Adrian Building on the university campus was carried out at the beginning of 2003. H&K have been involved with full M&E Design for this phase of works.

The Adrian Building contains the laboratories which were used by Sir Alec Jeffreys and in which DNA fingerprinting was discovered in 1985. This required a new strategy for the current cooling of the building and was developed bearing in mind the long term plans for the University campus and their request to allow future building connection to a proposed site wide heating and cooling system.

The use of natural ventilation was maximized in teaching and office areas. The research areas and controlled temperature rooms were provided by the new chilled water installation in conjunction with prefabricated constant temperature rooms.

The existing single pipe heating system has been integrated into the new cooling strategy for the building by means of a bespoke control system designed for this installation allowing each room to be controlled individually.
