University of Glasgow - Wolfson Medical School

Further & Higher Education

Project Title: University of Glasgow - Wolfson Medical School

Client: University of Glasgow

Project Value: £10m

Hulley contact: Bill Kilpatrick

The first ever purpose-built home for the Medical School on campus at Glasgow University provides both students and staff with unrivalled teaching and learning facilities.

The Medical School originates from competition winning design proposals developed after close consultation with the building’s users. The expression of a clear conceptual logic allied to the appropriate use of good quality materials allows the building to project its function as a Centre of Learning Excellence.

Three blocks of accommodation were arranged around a triangular atrium conceived as the social heart of the School. Internally, purpose built facilities with scope to host video link-ups for seminars and interactive surgical conferencing will provide unrivalled accommodation for Medical and Clinical Teaching.

The curvilinear glazed study landscape conveys a bold new image for the Medical School, acting as a powerful contrasting element to the rectilinear geometry of the other elements. Detailed investigations and analysis of daylight and glare control, environmental comfort control and energy efficiency were undertaken along with thermodynamic and lighting simulation studies to predict how the building will perform in use.

This project was the proud winner of The Scottish Design Award for Best Public Building 2003, RIBA Award, IIE Lighting Award, Civic Trust Award and also the Dynamic Places Award 2003.
