Hulley & Kirkwood first to become ACD qualified

21.02.08

Hulley & Kirkwood Consulting Engineers have become qualified BRE Self Assessors of Section 6 of the Building (Scotland) Act – the first organisation in Scotland able to offer this service for non-domestic properties.

An M&E Team of Engineers recently undertook extensive training to become Approved Certifiers of Design under the BRE Self Certification Scheme.

The scheme, approved by the Scottish Buildings Standards Agency, qualifies individuals and organisations to certify non-domestic building designs as having met the requirements of the Building Regulations (Section 6 Energy) and the Mandatory Functional Standards.

The Approved Certification of Design Schemes (ACD) were announced in August 2007 by the Scottish Executive Minister Stewart Stevenson. Benefits to clients using the ACD service is a 10% discount on their Building Warrant fees and the facility to fast track their Warrant application. The scheme works on the same principle as that now in common use with Structural Engineers who self certify their own calculations within an Approved Scheme and QA framework.

Hulley & Kirkwood (Glasgow) will shortly be registered as the Approved Body within which the ACD’s will operate. The Approved Body Co-ordinator for Hulley & Kirkwood is Director, Donald Wood.

Jim Costello, Sales & Marketing Director at Hulleys, comments:

“We have been informed by the BRE that our recently certified Team are the first, and at present only, individuals in the country to be qualified Section 6 self- assessors for non-domestic properties.”

“In Scotland, Building Control are looking for Section 6 submissions to be approved by designers who are registered self assessors, rather than in England where Building control will carry out this work themselves.  This creates further opportunities for us in Scotland and subsequently the rest of the UK.”
