New Drama Department opened at Hutcheson's Grammar School
06.02.12
Hutchesons’ Grammar School is a long-standing independent school with an enviable educational reputation and a history stretching some 370 years. Its’ campus is located to the South of Glasgow City Centre.
Hulley & Kirkwood were appointed via Project Managers, Arcadis, to join a professional team tasked with the design of a new free-standing building, intended to provide a focus for the school’s Drama department and curriculum.
The primary accommodation constituted three studios of varying sizes/volumes with flexibility at the heart of the design ethos.
The design of the ‘core’ M&E services was simple and discrete to compliment the clean and elegant architectural design of the building exterior and interior. Hulley and Kirkwood were responsible for the design of core services:
· Space Heating (Under-floor)
· Ventilation
· Cooling
· Water Services
· Foul Drainage
· Natural Gas
· Automatic Controls
· Electrical & Small Power
· Lighting
· Data, Lifts
· Fire Alarms
· Security
The building/studios were subject to a separate design of performance lighting, audio-visual and sound systems by a specialist in the field. Hulley and Kirkwood worked closely, with the DT and specialists to support the specialist installation in respect of containment, coordination and power supplies.
H&K were also integral to an enabling works contract that saw the site cleared of existing temporary structures/portacabins and buried services in preparation for the construction of the new building.
The completed facility provides not only a focus for the day-to-day teaching needs of the pupils, but also provides an excellent venue for school performances/shows and social functions alike, both intimate and large.
