Successful Completion of Anniesland College
06.09.10
This £51m state of the art project in the West End of Glasgow constituted a complete redevelopment of the existing Anniesland College campus, with the ultimate provision of a new Further Education College building providing some 17,400m2 of diverse learning accommodation constructed over 5 floors. The project was completed over 3 distinct phases which led to extensive enabling works, careful strategic design at campus level and an overall construction programme that extended from late 2007 until 2010.
The development was part funded by the Scottish Further and Higher Education Funding Council, providing Anniesland College with £45.1m for the new building.
Mark Batho, the Funding Council’s Chief Executive said “I am delighted our funding has enabled the college to create a building that will be a vibrant and inspiring place to learn for current students and for generations to come. It provides new learning and teaching space with first-class, modern facilities”.
Hulley & Kirkwood worked closely with the design team, client and Main Contractor to ensure that the complete redevelopment was carried out within the confines of the existing campus and that the inherent need to support the existing curriculum and student’s needs were achieved. The completed building design ethos embraced the following:
• Designed around a private external space
• Massing which addresses the site context
• Passive environmental design with North facing teaching accommodation
• Views and neighbour amenity
• Feature ‘Metro’ social/learning space
The Building Services design is complimentary to the architectural ethos, comprehensive and diverse, intended to embrace low/passive energy principles and service the varied needs of the teaching accommodation provided e.g. catering, dance and fitness, construction workshops, engineering workshops, IT, language and Special Educational Needs.
First Minister Alex Salmond officially opened the new college on 26th August 2010 stating that:
“The innovative building will enhance student’s educational experience, as well as providing a valuable resource for the community to use”... “Today is a celebration of a new environment and shows the value and importance of good facilities”.
