The Mall Blackburn revitalised

09.08.10

H&K project, The Mall Blackburn is coming to an end of a £60M refurbishment and extension that has seen the tired 1960's centre revitalised along with the addition of 100,000 sqft of new space.

The extension sees the creation of a 650,000 sqft centre and in parallel with the new construction, the existing centre has been fully refurbished which includes a new continental style market hall.

The key design considerations were to make the existing space look as bright as possible because of the low ceilings and car parking above providing no natural light opportunities.  Visually the biggest change has been the demolition of the concrete stair tower that linked the upper parking levels with the town's high street.  This has been replaced with a new steel and glass structure that is far more welcoming to shoppers and has become a key feature within the centre.

The shopping centre is due to open within weeks and is leaving Blackburn equipped to compete for the next 10-15 years.
