Birmingham Airport International Pier

Transport

Project Title: Birmingham Airport International Pier

Client: BIA

Project Value: £33.5m

Hulley contact: Andy Bradley

Hulley & Kirkwood were part of a successful team to develop design options and progress the preferred option forward to a suitable level sufficient for submission of a detailed planning application. Due to the age and numerous operational limitations of the existing pier and in line with the Airports long term masterplan, it is the intention of the client to develop and build a new international pier to replace the existing.

The project involves the provision of a 3 storey International Travel Pier to accommodate flights from inside and outside the EU. The project also involves the reorganisation of the apron and aircraft stands, and provision of fixed bridge links and air bridges.

H&K undertook detailed survey work to establish the extent and condition of existing services, numerous negotiations and close liaison with the Airport’s Engineering Department to ensure that all proposals not only met with operational needs but those of the Airport Engineers. Discussions were also undertaken with the Airport’s Energy Manager, particularly with the relatively recent changes to the Building Regulations and the sustainability issues these brings.

The proposals had to be worked around a fully operational Airport and the constraints and challenges that this brings.
