Project Title: British Airways Compass Centre
Client: British Airways
Project Value: £24m
Hulley contact: Bill Kilpatrick
British Airways’ Mission Statement is to be the Best and most Successful Company in the Industry. To achieve this, Flight Personnel have to be as happy on the ground as they are in the air.
The BA Compass Centre is an Operations Building which set out to meet that very objective. The Base Building essentially comprises of three blocks. As part of the fit-out escalators were provided in Block B from the Ground to the First Floor Level with structural provision for two more between the first and second floors. Standby generation and a UPS was provided for Block B, which also serve the Crisis Centre in Block C. The Services Installation required careful co-ordination by the Construction Manager MACE, Hulley & Kirkwood and the Trade Contractors.
Careful attention was paid to the artificial lighting. The lamps are mostly high frequency fluorescents in Category 2 luminaries, controlled via a Delmatic Lighting System. Open-plan areas are controlled via presence detection, linked to cover 25% of any open plan area, while the first two perimeter rows operate off daylight sensors. The Base Building Roof Top Plantrooms were all procured from Moducel as packaged units, while independent heating and cooling plant was provided to each block with VAV air handling plant installed on the basis of one unit per 2500m².
The building’s solar shading and thermal mass (albeit largely de-coupled from the spaces by raised floors) knocked off 60 tonnes of refrigeration (tr) off the peak loads for Blocks A and C and 120 tr off Block B.
