Project Title: University of St Andrews – New Arts Building
Client: Reiach & Hall
St Andrews is Scotland’s first University and the third oldest in the UK. For almost six centuries, they have proudly upheld the tradition of academic excellence, attracting scholars of international repute and students from all over the world.
Today, they continue to offer the latest in teaching and research, all within a superbly picturesque mediaeval setting. Although St Andrews is not a campus University, it has grown and developed with the town and is now comfortably integrated.
To ensure this integration and harmony between the old and new is maintained, HulleySIM were tasked to examine the potential impact of the proposed University of St Andrews, New Arts Faculty Building on adjacent existing residential dwellings.
The main focus of this study was to determine whether any shadows cast onto the rear elevations of the residential dwellings, as a result of the proposed New Arts Faculty Building, caused significant overshadowing and/or impacted the levels of natural daylight currently experienced within the dwellings themselves.
