Project Title: Quartermile Q2 (Gateway 1)
Client: Foster and Partners
The Quartermile master plan was conceived by world-renowned architects Foster and Partners and provides over 650 high-quality apartments in a stunning landscaped setting, many with views to the Meadows or the Castle. Quartermile will also offer more than 30,000 sq m of premium office space and a mixture of shops, restaurants, cafes and public areas.
HulleySIM have been tasked with numerous simulation jobs each considering different aspects of the project to differing levels of detail. The work carried out to date includes;
Solar analysis of the Quartermile Site, specifically with regards to the commercial building Q2. The purpose of the study was to determine the exposure of each glass elevation to direct sunlight (and therefore solar gain) over the course of a year and subsequently determine the required extent of solar control glass on each facade.
Once H&K had determined which elevations would require solar control glass the next step was to ensure that any glass that was specified would provide suitable internal conditions for the users of the buildings. Using thermal modelling software we conducted bulk air flow analysis, mainly of the atrium spaces to ascertain the predicted peak temperatures and how these were influenced by glazing types and ventilation strategy.
- Building Regulation Compliance - (Part J Conservation of fuel and power)
The proposed types of glass and the mechanical ventilation strategy have various implications with respect to energy consumption of the building. Simulation software was employed to ensure that the building would meet the building regulations using the Carbon Emission Calculation Method (CECM).
