Project Title: Chancellors Building – New Medical School

Client: University of Edinburgh

For 120 years Edinburgh’s Faculty of Medicine has been based in buildings adjacent to the old Edinburgh Royal Infirmary at Lauriston Place. During this period these buildings have housed research activities and the teaching of medical students in anatomy, biochemistry, pharmacology, physiology, medical microbiology and pathology and gained an international reputation as being amongst the best in the world The Faculty needed to sustain its pre-eminent position in the field of medicine and provide medical students with modern teaching accommodation. To achieve this and maintain close links with the Royal Infirmary, the Faculty elected to move to the ‘Little France’ site at the same time as the New Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

The new Medical School includes offices, two large lecture theatres with video conferencing facilities, seminar and tutorial rooms, a library and state of the art research laboratories. Before starting work, the Project Team undertook research visits to other laboratory facilities to supplement their already wide experience of scientific and medical environments. The flexibility and depth of experience of the Project Team is well demonstrated by the wide range of different facilities designed, installed and commissioned at the Medical School. The lecture theatres, library, seminar rooms and offices are all fitted out to a high standard. Extensive wet and dry teaching laboratories are supplied with water, gas electrical and deionised water services. The containment requirements of specialist areas are met by pressure gradients between main areas, lobbies and Category 3 areas and these areas include HEPA filtered safety cabinets. External controls and metering conform to all relevant laboratory safety category requirements.

The £40 million Chancellor’s Building provides modern open laboratory space for teaching and research supported by central core facilities - two large lecture theatres and a medical library.
